Squirrel-Proof Pumpkin Bird Feeder with Cage and 4 Metal Ports

There is very few caged feeders available that are round enough to keep the starlings out. They have learned to just reach in like a flicker and get the seed. This on is attractive, well made and round enough!

I was having trouble with grackles devouring the birdseed too fast, as well as annoying the other birds. I needed a feeder that kept grackles out. This pumpkin feeder does the job. The cage allows smaller birds, like tufted titmice, Carolina wrens, and downy woodpeckers, to feed. It keeps out any bigger birds and squirrels. The wide round shape keeps the grackles and squirrels from reaching the center seed container ports. However, it does allow a red-bellied woodpecker, with a longer beak and tongue, to feed on the shelled sunflower seeds. I set up a separate regular feeder with safflower seeds for the cardinals and blue jays. Grackles and squirrels don\'t like safflower. This feeder has two issues. Something heavy (probably a raccoon) was on it the first night and the joint connection on the wire hanger broke; the feeder was on the ground the next morning. This was a simple fix -- I just replaced it with another wire. A bigger problem is that there is a 1.5 inch gap below the bottom feeder port that holds uneaten seed. Once this gets wet from rain it will get moldy and have to be cleaned. This feeder cannot be taken apart and therefore will be very hard to clean, and that\'s why I didn\'t give it 5 stars. Otherwise I\'m really enjoying watching the activity at this feeder and it solved my grackle problem.

Though this is a well made and sturdy option for a bird feeder, the bar openings are very small. They don\'t specify what type of birds can easily get into the feeder BUT the picture shows a parakeet, which is deceiving. Our primary purpose for this was to feed the wild parakeets in our yard without larger birds becoming a nuisance. In order for the parakeets to gain access, we had to cut away several of the bars to make the opening larger.
